I’ve already blogged about the atrocity that is RapeLay, a Japanese hentai game in which the gamer acts as a stalker who rapes a mother and her daughters. After all the controversy that erupted over the game’s release occurred, distributors did everything they could to still sell rape games.
According to The Escapist,
Some responded by changing the titles (Gang Raped by the Entire Village ~Girls Covered in Milky Liquid~ became The Trap Set by the Entire Village ~Bodies Covered in Milky Liquid~) without changing the content, and some responded by assuming that the games wouldn’t offend our delicate foreign sensibilities if we couldn’t access their site.
Yeah, I know.
One PC download site called BGameBox supposedly shut down their rape game categories “ryoujoku” (rape) and “choukyou” (sexual slave training).
However,
The Rape category will be renamed “Platinum” games, while the Sexual Slave Training category is now known as the “Thoroughbred” category.
Thoroughbred? Somehow that’s more offensive than the original category name. Who would’ve thought it was possible to come up with something worse? If you’re going to have rape games, call them rape games. Imagine going into the section unknowingly and then realizing that– whoops– “Thoroughbred” is not a reference to horse racing.
Rape games can’t be banned altogether, but pretending to be a rapist for entertainment purposes can only desensitize gamers as to how horrific rape actually is. I’m sure some will compare these to assassin/murder games and say they’re just as bad. Any game in which you gain points by shooting pedestrians or smashing heads into walls is disturbing. But a game in which you gain points by forcing a raped woman to get an abortion (if the child is born, the gamer is thrown onto train tracks) seems more psychologically intricate in the most alarming of ways.
