More than free pens at this conference
I just got back from the National Sexual Assault Conference in Baltimore (which I attended thanks to a scholarship from the Dept. of Justice). There were a lot of things I was really glad to hear about while I was there:
- Civil attorneys can help college student survivors secure their rights to a safe education (www.victimrights.org)
- Other folks are incorporating anti-oppression training into their prevention work (TAASA)
- There are good numbers to show that multi-session bystander-focused prevention education works at the college level (Bringing in the Bystander)
- Organizations are using social marketing techniques in imaginative ways that target bystanders (isn’t she a little young?)
- There are young men out there who have made a difference and will continue to do so (www.mcsr.org)
I’ll be adding some of the resources from the conference to the blog links. If there’s something you think should be added, please let me know!
New edition of Change Happens!
I’m so excited about our new edition of Change Happens, our guide to reforming school sexual assault policies. It’s expanded and updated, with new resources and info. You can request a PDF version or order your own shiny hard copy. If you have a campus women’s center, LGBTQ student center, men’s resource center, or other interested campus group or center, make sure they have a copy for their resource library!
A court on our side!
College Football: Colorado Rape Lawsuit Is Revived
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: September 7, 2007
An appeals court revived a lawsuit by two women who claim they were gang raped at a University of Colorado recruiting party in 2001, ruling there is evidence the alleged assaults were caused by the university’s failure to adequately supervise players. The ruling by the 10th United States Circuit Court of Appeals, which sends the case back to the trial court, said there was evidence the university had an official policy of showing high school recruits a “good time†and that it showed a “deliberate indifference†to any known sexual harassment.
