Did you see 60 Minutes’ interviews with the indicted Duke lacrosse players this past Sunday?
What 60 Minutes’ unbalanced coverage provided was a real disservice to the thousands of college students who are sexually assaulted each year. Who wants to come forward and risk being called a liar on national television?
Regardless of the truth in the Duke case, a little context would have gone a long way to establish that unwanted sexual contact is a real experience for an astounding percentage of college students. For many reasons, including culture, fear, and lack of knowledge that certain behavior is criminal, many of these experiences go unreported to authorities. 60 Minutes did nothing to improve this situation, and a great deal to make it worse.
