Jill at Feministe has a call to action for the Jaime Leigh Jones case. Jones has alleged that she was raped by co-workers while working as a contractor in Iraq. Because of legal loopholes, U.S. contractors working in Iraq may not be subject to any criminal laws, and so far the investigation into her claims seems to have stalled. Several members of Congress are working to get answers about her case (and others like it) and you can do your part by telling your Representatives and Senators that this issue matters to you.
One of the comments at Feministe brought up the important point that the victim who has had the most success being heard (although even Jones’s success in making her voice heard has been a pretty limited so far) is a white American. So please remember when contacting your Congresspeople to stress the importance of making all contractors subject to a system of law, whether their victims are Americans or Iraqis (see the controversy over the Blackwater shooting), privileged or not.
