I wrote about the ridiculous and dangerous proposal from the Bush administration this summer that would allow health care providers to define abortion so broadly as to include major forms of contraception, including emergency contraception. It seemed like the new regulation had stalled on the wave of opposition, but now it has been put forward again!
Among other dangers, this regulation could undermine laws in 14 states that require all emergency medical providers to offer rape victims emergency contraception or information on where to obtain emergency contraception. No one should be forced to bear a pregnancy caused by a rape because someone else decided to deny them a legal means of preventing up to 89% of such pregnancies. Emergency contraception is NOT ABORTION – it has no effect if the egg and sperm have already united and implanted in the uterus. Deliberately spreading false information is not an acceptable tactic in a democracy, and I am horrified that the Bush administration is attempting yet again to force this nonsense through.
Please register your disgust at this underhanded tactic here.
