The Washington Post has a long, informative editorial on the backlog of rape kits waiting to have DNA testing done, how states have failed to prioritize testing rape kits, the way the reauthorization just passed by the House isn’t going to help the problem, and what the Senate bill should do to make sure that rapists who could be caught through the hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits are.
So read the article, and then go call your Senators and demand the accountability measures, allocation directives, and removal of controversial DNA testing for people who haven’t been convicted (!! will we have any civil liberties left by the time the current administration finally gets out of office in six months?!?!) that she suggests. Rape victims who have requested to have their attackers pursued through an analysis of DNA from a sexual assault exam deserve to have that testing done.
