This image is old news now, having made the rounds on various blogs last week. This shirt was being sold at Amazon.com but has since been removed due to the number of complaints. That’s good news, as far as I’m concerned–it’s relieving to know that sometimes if enough people speak up, action will actually be taken. Now if we could move from the consumer world to the political arena…Anyway, the bad news is of course that t-shirts like this, mocking and trivializing rape, are made in the first place.
SAFER has covered this issue before since, unfortunately, there seems to be a large market for “hilarious” rape t-shirts. First there was “It’s Not Rape, It’s Just Surprise Sex.” Then there was “No Means No. Well Maybe If I’m Drunk.” Also the more straightforward “Serial Rapist.” Sifting through the Jezebel comments on the “date rape” t-shirt story I found one reader who reports:
There’s a kid on my campus who wears a T-shirt that says (I shit you not) “Mace only makes me hornier”
Clearly this is a problem. We can keep protesting the stores who sell this kind of apparel, but I ask a question to the other SAFER bloggers and readers: what to do when you come across someone wearing this stuff?
