We’re a little slow this week, but only because we’re working so hard on BIG EXCITING THINGS. Like our snazzy new website, which will be launched on November 1. So I’m going to get back to that, and leave you with some Jon Stewart for your Saturday. Most of you have probably seen this video by now, but I couldn’t resist posting Stewart’s awesome takedown of the 30 Republican congresspeople who, for some reason, voted against Senator Al Franken’s amendment to “deny defense contracts to companies that ask employees to sign away the right to sue.” This amendment was prompted by the case of Jamie Leigh Jones, a Halliburton/KBR employee who was gang-reaped by coworkers while on assignment in Baghdad in 2005. The company told her that her employment contract barred her from taking legal action. One would think that denying the right of corporations to cover up rape would be a no brainer. Not for everyone! Thanks to Jon Stewart for calling it like it is.

Worth noting that this notion that private institutions can have their own contractual arrangements prohibiting suing for rape has continuities with the frequently-used argument that universities should have a right to not have their own sexual assault policies and/or to force victims to handle the matter internally.
