Oh, PETA.

Feministe posted a disgusting PETA billboard showing a cartoon of an overweight woman in a bikini at the beach that says, “Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber. Go Vegetarian.”

Of course PETA’s protesting (advertising) methods are legendary now:

They have sexualized women, dressed as KKK members, and openly mocked the GLBT community. One of my personal favourite excuses was, we employ teh minorities so we cannot be racist.

From PETA’s own press release:

A new PETA billboard campaign that was just launched in Jacksonville reminds people who are struggling to lose weight — and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball — that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. The ad shows a woman whose “blubber” is spilling over the sides of her swimsuit bottom…

Anyone wishing to achieve a hot “beach bod” is reminded that studies show that vegetarians are, on average, about 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters…

Before reading the entry in depth, I read this part first and assumed it was criticizing PETA’S advertising methods. It’s hilarious that their own press release cannot hide how hateful the billboard is. Fighting for the rights of animals by shaming others seems to be PETA’s forte, it’s true, but how is it helpful to their cause if they offend half of the U.S.?
