Normally, your standard politics don’t interest me all that much. I’m progressive enough that who I’ll vote for is pretty much a given most of the time, so I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about it. I volunteer and donate when there’s a close or important race, but my focus is usually not on electoral politics.
This, however, caught my attention. Remember Clayton Williams? He ran for governor in Texas a few years back, and during his run he made the now-infamous statement in which he compared rape to the weather, saying, “As long as it’s inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it.”
Anyway, apparently John McCain has now canceled a fundraiser that was to be organized by Mr. Williams, because the media got wind of it. But he has not rejected or denounced Williams, nor has he donated the more than $300,000 Williams has raised for the McCain campaign to an anti-sexual violence organization, as he should.
I’m flat-our disgusted that a presidential candidate in our country feels just fine holding a fundraiser with someone who would make such a despicable comment, until the media finds out about it. And I’m more disgusted that even though he’s been caught red-handed, McCain thinks he can get away with keeping the money.
Some days it’s just not worth getting out of bed in the morning.
H/T Daily Kos for the link.
Update: Turns out McCain isn’t even really canceling the fundraiser. He has simply rescheduled.
