Ugh. Backlash Alert

The LA Times ran an awful op-ed this morning about the phony rape crisis on college campuses – it doesn’t exist apparently, it’s just lots of silly girls who don’t know better than to keep their clothes on. Very typical stuff: selective quoting, no interviews with survivors, claims that colleges provide excessive services and bend over backwards to support survivors, if women are dumb enough to be out partying, then they’re getting what they want. The author is a fellow at the Manhattan Institute, a right-wing think tank with a long history of opposition to social justice causes in the United States (they proudly highlight their support of Charles Murray, co-author of the racist and classist book The Bell Curve, for example). For more information, check out what Source Watch has to say about them.

SAFER will have a longer response soon, but I really encourage all of you to write into the LA Times as well. Let’s add some real students’ and survivors’ perspectives to this caricature of our movement and our lives.

  1. I saw that headline for that in my news alerts but didn’t get to it. I couldn’t believe it was saying what the headline indicated. I’ll be working on a letter to the LA Times today if I can make it anything but an angry rant.
